This conversation with HE Máximo E. Gowland, Argentine ambassador to Australia and to the Republic of Fiji, revolves around multilingual communication in conference, diplomatic and other international settings.  

Some of the questions include the role of interpreters and interpretation end-users in ensuring communication effectiveness,  the speakers’ trust in interpreters, and their expectations of interpreting accuracy.

The conversation will include Prof. Ludmila Stern, and Prof. Sandra Hale, and Mr Benoît Malmontet, who will discuss their experience of interpreting in international settings, including language-specific challenges.

HE Máximo E. Gowland

Argentine ambassador to Australia and to the Republic of Fiji

A lawyer who graduated at the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Máximo E. Gowland, Argentine Ambassador to Australia, is a career diplomat who entered the Argentine National Foreign Service in 1997. He worked at the Foreign Ministry’s General Directorate for Antarctic Affairs from 1997-99; 2007-2011; and again, from March 2015 till November 2021; as National Director for Antarctic Foreign Policy since November 2016.

During these periods he attended eleven Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCMs), since 2016 as Head of Delegation, when he also chaired the Antarctic Tourism negotiations between 2015 and 2019.  He has also attended meetings of the Commission on Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) on eleven occasions, as Commissioner and Head of Delegation since 2016. In 2019 he was appointed Vice-Chair of the CAMLR Commission (2019/20).

He has acted as inspector of foreign stations in Antarctica in 2016 and 2017 and has written articles and been lecturer at several courses, seminars and conferences on Antarctic issues.

On his postings abroad, Mr Gowland has served in the Argentine Consulate General in Miami, USA (1999-2007) and at the Argentine Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay (2011-2015).  He was appointed as Ambassador to Australia in December 2021 and currently also serves as Argentine Ambassador to the Republic of Fiji.
