Join Professors Rosalind Dixon (Resilient Democracy Lab) and Janina Boughey (Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law), and Associate Professor Gautam Bhatia (Green Fellow) for a conversation on Defending Democratic Constitutionalism.
How can democratic constitutional systems remain resilient, legitimate and accountable in a period marked by democratic backsliding, technological disruption, misinformation and declining public trust in institutions?
Drawing on expertise in democratic resilience, public law, constitutional design, government accountability and comparative constitutionalism, the discussion will explore the challenges facing democratic institutions today and the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration to strengthen them.

Rosalind Dixon is a Scientia Professor of Law and Co-Director of the UNSW Resilient Democracy Lab. An internationally recognised scholar of comparative constitutional law, her research focuses on comparative constitutional law, democratic resilience, constitutional design and institutional reform, particularly in response to democratic backsliding and contemporary challenges to constitutional democracy. She is also Director of the Pathways to Politics for Women Program (NSW), Co-Director of the UNSW Gender Equality Hub, and former Director of the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law.
Janina Boughey is Director of the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law and a Professor in the School of Global and Public Law at UNSW Sydney. Her research focuses on public law, administrative justice and government accountability, with particular expertise in how legal institutions can maintain integrity, fairness and public trust in an era of technological and social change.
Gautam Bhatia will join Law & Justice in August as a Green Fellow in the School of Global & Public Law. An expert in comparative constitutional law, his research focuses on constitutional democracy, the rule of law and democratic resilience. He has written extensively on constitutional rights, institutional accountability and constitutional governance, and practises before the Supreme Court of India.
Daniel Joyce is Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Law & Justice. He is an Associate Professor at UNSW Law & Justice and specialising in international law, media law and human rights. Daniel is an Associate of the Australian Human Rights Institute and a Member of the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law where he leads a project on freedom of expression, social media and online speech. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Human Rights, the Academic Review Board of the Cambridge Journal of International Law, and the Editorial Review Board of the Queen Mary Human Rights Law Review.
