In this seminar, Ms Camille Lapierre will describe her experience of interpreting at a high-profile coronial inquest that took place in Byron Bay in late 2021. In addition to addressing the role of the interpreter and training during such legal proceedings, she will discuss current interpreting work practices, such as the use of simultaneous interpreting equipment as well as how we can further improve the experience for all participants, including practitioners and interpretation users (judicial officer, court staff, NESB participants, counsel). These issues will be examined in light of the Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals (JCCD, 2017) and excerpts from the inquest will be shown to illustrate the reality and the challenges faced during this matter. The seminar will be conducted as a conversation with Ludmila Stern, followed by a Q&A from the floor.
Originally from a small town in the west of France, Camille is a professional interpreter and interpreting educator who graduated from UNSW Sydney with a Master in Interpreting and obtained her NAATI certification for community as well as conference interpreting in French<>English in 2018.
From the start of her professional career, Camille has been an active contributor to the profession through her participation in and later as a Chair of the AUSIT NSW Committee as well as through tutoring several interpreting courses at UNSW Sydney.
As a practitioner, her interests lie in every branch of interpreting, with regular work in courts and tribunals, hospitals as well as simultaneous and conference interpreting for international events. With the recent COVID-19 situation, Camille is been increasingly working remotely, using remote consecutive and simultaneous technology. She strives for a greater working environment through dialogues with language service providers and interpretation users.
