CVMM International Speaker Series with Dr Steven Niederer
The Cardiac, Vascular & Metabolic Medicine Theme presents the third event in its series of faculty-wide lectures by renowned international speakers. Our visiting speaker is Dr Steven Niederer from Imperial College London, presenting a lecture on “The Digital Heart: Using Mathematics to Model the Heart from Cell to Clinic”.
Dr Niederer is Chair in Biomedical Engineering at the National Heart and Lung Institute, and is visiting UNSW as guest of CVMM International Speaker Fellowship recipient, Professor Dianne Fatkin.
Speaking as part of the Cardiovascular Research Showcase at the St Vincent’s Sydney Health Innovation Precinct Research Week 2024, this is an exciting opportunity for UNSW students and researchers to hear cutting-edge insights and experiences from an international expert.
Dr Steven Niederer
Dr. Steven Niederer completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science at the University of Auckland in 2003 and his DPhil in Computer Science on modelling the rat heart at the University of Oxford in 2008. From 2010 to 2023 he started and grew the Cardiac Electro-Mechanics Research Group at King’s College London, where his research focused on accelerating and translating patient-specific modelling of the heart into clinical applications. In 2023 Dr. Niederer moved to Imperial College London as the Chair in Biomedical Engineering at the National Heart and Lung Institute and became a Co-Director for the Digital Twin Turing Research and Innovation Cluster at the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Research Centre. His current work is focused on reducing barriers to adopting digital twin technology, developing virtual patient cohorts for in-silico trials, mapping organ scale function through to cellular and molecular physiology, and using modelling and simulation to personalize and guide therapies.
