Are you curious to hear about the real world application of research conducted by some of Sydney's top scientists?

During National Science Week, visit UNSW's Kensington campus for two entertaining and enlightening short sessions with a selection of our researchers, in the relaxed surrounds of the newly refurbished UNSW Bookshop. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions.

Session 2 (1.15 to 2.15pm)

Tales from the field: small observations in an era of big data

Feathers, frogs and fish; these three researchers work in far-flung corners of the globe to collect their data and progress their research. Their stories from the field are fascinating examples of the diversity of the work of a scientist.

Speakers

Dr Kate Brandis is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Ecoystem Science, UNSW Sydney. She is an expert on Australian wetlands and waterbirds including the management of water and environmental flows, and the project leader for the Feather Map of Australia citizen science project.

Dr Jodi Rowley is the Curator of Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Biology, a joint appointment between the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, UNSW Sydney and the Australian Museum. Her research focuses on amphibian diversity, ecology and conservation, and she regularly conducts expeditions throughout Australia and Southeast Asia in search of amphibians.

Professor Iain Suthers is from the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences UNSW Sydney. He has conducted 12 research voyages to the East Australian Current studying fish, fisheries and plankton and has worked in many NSW estuaries. There’s a reason for all that grey hair. Many reasons.

Hosted by Professor Alistair Poore, Head of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science.
