In a small village somewhere in France, a strange phenomenon is taking place. The townsfolk are turning into rhinoceroses.
It begins with just one, but soon the streets are awash with rhinos. Is it more enjoyable to frolic in the swamps than turn up to work? Or is there something irresistible about being one of the herd?
This darkly humorous play written by Eugene Ionesco and directed by Deborah Pollard is considered an Absurdist masterpiece. Set against a backdrop of rising fascism and conformity in the build-up to World War II, Rhinoceros explores the dangers of herd mentality.
Can the townsfolk hold onto their humanity and resist the Rhinoceritis epidemic or will they succumb? In Ionesco’s uproarious world, all is out of kilter and, it seems, not even love can save the day.
