Smart City, Green City, Resilient City or Sustainable City, all terms with slightly different implications but all referring to recent trends in planning and management of cities which emphasise quality of life in the long term. Asian cities have embraced all four of these mantras with enthusiasm, however to what extent have they engendered new and effective ways to manage rapid urbanisation?
This is particularly relevant to Indonesian cities, which have embraced the various manifestations of sustainability in order to cope with extremely significant urban growth trends in new ways. This presentation will identify and critically assess the challenges and opportunities that these planning initiatives are addressing. It will also seek to offer some views on how best to plan and manage Indonesia’s rapid urbanisation in order to realise a more inclusive urban environment.
