Panel: What is Curating?
Unpack the practice of curating with José Roca, Talia Linz and James Gatt in this panel discussion.
For the 23rd Biennale of Sydney, Artistic Director José Roca assembled a curatorium of four local curators and producers to collaborate with on the research and development of the exhibition. The egalitarian aims of this collaborative model are not without risk, as Roca himself identified: “The collective can also blunt radicality.”
This panel discussion brings together José Roca and curatorium member Talia Linz with independent curator James Gatt to question "what is curating, and how should we do it?" Drawing on examples from the 23rd Biennale of Sydney ‘rivus’, the panel will unpack the practice of curating in the contemporary context addressing questions such as:
What are the options and responsibilities of the curator? What models exist or don’t yet exist that can be useful for curating? How do we adjust curating for various modes and outcomes? To what extent is curating necessarily collaborative?
