What can art reveal about the harms of incarceration that statistics cannot? Inside Out is an immersive environment blending 2D and 3D animation with artworks and stories from people with lived experience of incarceration. The exhibition engages with the Drawing Free exhibition an output of the NH&MRC Centre of Research Excellence project on violence perpetration and was created by UNSW Art & Design students. It offers a stereotype-free lens on an experience that remains largely invisible to the public. The poverty, addiction, and intergenerational disadvantage visible in Australian prisons are not confined to prison walls; they reflect some of the country's most pressing social and health challenges, brought into sharp relief by this exhibition.

The poverty, addiction, and trauma expressed creatively in this exhibition highlights some of Australia's most pressing social challenges, and prisons show us these problems at their most concentrated. Research from UNSW's Justice Health Program makes clear that punishment alone cannot address what trauma has caused; what's needed is trauma-informed, rehabilitative care.
