The UNSW Scientia Education Academy is delighted to host Associate Professor Joanna Tai from Deakin University.

The Universities Accord has placed a renewed focus on widening participation and supporting success for all students who are studying at university in Australia. A substantial body of research has progressively sought to identify and address issues for equity group students, yet at a population level, they do not enjoy the same graduation rates. Are existing support structures inadequate, or has the equity student journey evolved in recent years, with increasing cost-of-living pressures, and the ability to study anywhere, at any time? And what can educators do about it?

This lecture draws on a longitudinal qualitative project to offer in-depth insights into equity students’ experiences of navigating and negotiating their studies. It will then consider the possibilities to develop curriculum and assessment practices which may better support students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse characteristics to succeed at university.
