Doughnuts & Debate: How Did Life Originate?

Every living thing on Earth is your cousin. 

Everything.  

From wildebeest to Arborio rice, we all descend from the same primordial ooze that coalesced into “life” around 4 billion years ago.  

We know that much. But a question has bothered scientists since there have been scientists to be bothered: how did it all begin?  

The precise steps are hazy, but some of us really, really want to know. 

If you’re one of those people, come along to Doughnuts & Debate to hear some of the brightest minds draw on insights from the stars, the rocks beneath our feet and the cells in our bodies as they explore how life got going, where it all began, and what it might mean for our place in the universe. 

Debate kicks off at 12.15pm sharp. Join us beforehand for lunch and doughnuts, a virtual trip to Mars and the chance to meet one of Earth's oldest residents: a hand-sized stromatolite that's 3.48 billion years old.

This event is presented by UNSW Science as a part of National Science Week.
