Between April and June 2021, more than 170 researchers, policy experts and practitioners working across Africa and beyond have come together to discuss law and policy responses to displacement and migration in the context of disasters and climate change. Through a series of Plenary Sessions and Thematic Working Groups, participants have:

  • Discussed opportunities for addressing displacement and migration in the context of disasters and climate change within regional and sub-regional law and policy frameworks in Africa;

  • Identified key knowledge gaps that need to be addressed for these opportunities to be more fully realised;

  • Developed future research proposals to address these knowledge gaps and further advance opportunities to avert, minimise and respond to displaced in the region.

On 1 July 2021, the Closing Plenary Session of the workshop series was held to hear about the outcomes of these discussions and the key priorities for future research to address displacement and migration in the context of disasters and climate change in Africa. The Closing Plenary Session featured keynote presentations, reports from each Thematic Working Group, and information about plans for future research and collaboration.
