Challenging Masculinity: State of Man ABC documentary and panel
Engage with academics, ABC producers, and education leaders on the challenges of modern masculinity.
Ideas about what it means to be a man today are changing. In a time when social media feeds are heavily optimised, many young men are drawn to a growing nebula of online influencers who answer questions of identity and status, often in a brutal way.
Why are these narratives gaining ground? What shapes masculinity norms in Australia, and is Australia different from other parts of the world? What are the harms? And what might healthier alternatives look like?
To better understand these issues, UNSW Business School invites you to a panel discussion on "Challenging Masculinity". The event will mark the launch of two projects:
- The State of Man, an ABC documentary on masculinity in Australia. 📺 Watch the trailer
- The Atlas of Masculinity, gathering data on masculinity around the world
Programme:
The event will open with a short screening of the documentary, followed by talks from confirmed speakers, including:
- Melissa Maclean, ABC producer: behind the making of The State of Man
- Prof. Pauline Grosjean, UNSW Business School: masculinity in a broader perspective
- Daniel Allars, Top Blokes Foundation: how to shape healthy masculinities in schools
The session will close with a discussion on recent developments, including the rise of the "manosphere" and how to frame narratives that counter it, with time for audience Q&A.
