The 2024 Emerging Scholars Network Annual Workshop is co-hosted by the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law and the Forced Migration Research Network at UNSW Sydney.

The workshop is a hybrid event held over three days from Wednesday 20 to Friday 22 November in Sydney, Australia, and brings together early career scholars in the field of refugee and forced migration studies.

This year the workshop is bigger than ever. We have planned three days of activities, including expert panel sessions, scholar presentations, masterclasses, a book launch, a keynote oration and a social coastal walk. ESN Workshop Day 1

Wednesday 20 November

Building a Career for Research Impact - Knowledge Exchange, 1:00pm - 2:45pm AEDT

This panel discussion will explore how to build a career for research impact and to foster effective partnerships for knowledge translation. The session will feature the following panellists:  Dr Renee Dixson, Forcibly Displaced People Network and LGBTIQA+ refugee advocate ; Ellen Hansen, Convenor International Refugee Law, ANU and former Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, UNHCR and Head of Governance, UNHCR;  Lauren Minson, Acting Director | Humanitarian Reform and Refugee Policy Section Protracted Crises, Resilience and Partnerships Branch | Humanitarian Division, DFAT; Scientia Professor Jane McAdam AO, Kaldor Centre, UNSW; Dr Tristan Harley, Kaldor Centre, UNSW (Moderator).

Translating Knowledge into Practice  - Tips and Tricks, 3:15pm - 5:00pm AEDT

This panel discussion will explore the skills and techniques researchers can use to effectively translate knowledge into practice. The panel will feature: Ashleigh Dunstan, James Martin Institute for Public Policy; Lauren Martin, Kaldor Centre, UNSW;  Jasmina Bajraktarevic-Hayward, STARTTS and Refugee Council of Australia;  Dr Tina Dixson, Australian National University and LGBTIQA+ refugee advocate; Professor Ruth Balint, Forced Migration Research Network, UNSW (Moderator).

Book launch -  'Judging Refugees: Narrative and Oral Testimony in Refugee Status Determination' by Dr Anthea Vogl, 5:30-6:30pm AEDT

Join us for drinks and nibbles from 5pm, followed by a one-hour discussion of the book with Dr Anthea Vogl, Dr Tina Dixson, Associate Professor Maria Giannacopoulos  and Associate Professor Daniel Ghezelbash.

ESN Workshop Day 2

Thursday 21 November

Emerging Scholars Network Presentation Showcase, 9.00am-5:00pm AEDT

This full-day, hybrid workshop will feature more than 20 emerging scholars showcasing new and original research. It is an opportunity to hear about work in progress and connect with a diverse range of researchers from around the world working in the field of refugee and forced migration studies. The workshop will be run in person at the UNSW Faculty of Law & Justice in Sydney. For participants who are unable to travel to the workshop, there is the opportunity for virtual attendance. The workshop will be followed by the 2024 Kaldor Centre Oration commencing at 6:30pm.

ESN Workshop participants are invited to register for the 2024 Kaldor Centre Oration, a new flagship lecture hosted by the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law. The inaugural Oration will enrich the public conversation on refugee issues by showcasing transformational ideas that can spark fresh thinking and action. It is a valuable opportunity to build shared understanding and positive solutions. The inaugural Kaldor Centre Oration will be delivered by Kate Eastman AM SC, with a response from Zaki Haidari.
