The concert hall was not always a place of reverent silence. Neither Beethoven nor the youthful Brahms expected their audiences to desist from conversation, playing cards, or moving about. The atmosphere was often more like that of a soirée – a social event where the music was an essential element. Only the most dedicated amateurs in the audience appreciated the complexities and brilliance of trios such as those performed today. The lines between the social and artistic are deliberately blurred by Carl Vine and Jean Françaix. Vine’s Café Concertino was inspired by the traditions of a French café and crafted with innovative harmonic structures. Françaix uses the startling timbres of the bass clarinet and tango rhythms to create a sense of fun, setting the six instruments against each-other in good-natured rivalry
