UNSW Law presents the 2019 Hal Wootten Lecture with Honourable Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud

The Hal Wootten Lecture is the highlight of the Faculty's year and commemorates Hal Wootten's founding vision for the Law School.

This year we are proud to have Honourable Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court of India present the 2019 Hal Wootten Lecture.

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud

Honourable Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India. He completed his Doctoral of Juridical Sciences in 1986 from Harvard University and was appointed as a Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2000 and Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013. He was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 13 May, 2016. As a judge, he has authored several landmark judgments on affirmative action, gender justice, environmental protection, criminal law and constitutional law including the decriminalization of homosexuality and adultery. Last year, he authored the sole dissent in the constitutional challenge to the Aadhaar Unique Identification Program which involved the state collection of biometric data. His dissent was cited by the Supreme Court of Jamaica and received significant academic praise for its views on privacy.
