Hear from an expert panel including UNSW Professor of Economics Richard Holden, career advisor Blair Slater and UNSW postgraduate alumni. They’ll reveal the new in-demand skills, share insight into gaining a competitive edge in the new job market and discuss how to establish long-term career success.

 


 

Panelists

Richard Holden is Professor of Economics at UNSW Business School and was an Australian Research Council Future Fellow from 2013-2017. Prior to that he was on the faculty at the University of Chicago and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received a PhD from Harvard University in 2006, where he was a Frank Knox Scholar. Professor Holden has been a Visiting Professor of Economics at the Harvard Economics Department, the MIT Department of Economics and Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School. His research has been featured in press articles in such outlets as: The New York Times, The Financial Times, the New Republic, and the Daily Kos. More info here.

Blair Slater is the Portfolio Lead & Head of Student Career-ready Connections at UNSW Sydney. Blair has a background in student career development, international education and work integrated learning and is currently overseeing Employer Engagement & Partnerships, Global Careers and Employability Experiences in the role of Portfolio Lead, Student Career-Ready Connections. Through his extensive knowledge of student career development and work integrated learning at UNSW, Blair will add a valuable voice to this conversation about the career services on offer at UNSW – highlighting examples of where a postgraduate degree can take you and how UNSW can get you there. Blair will also give insights and advice to international prospects on what they can expect in the job market upon completing a postgraduate degree in Australia.

Talia Stump has over 10 years’ experience working to enhance the inclusion and wellbeing of refugee communities through policy, research and practice. In 2019 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship and travelled to Canada, US, Germany, Norway and Sweden to research strategies to support the secondary migration of refugees to regional and rural towns. Talia is passionate about creating impact through collaboration, ensuring that people with lived experience are at the centre of decisions that affect them. She currently works as Associate Director Settlement for Multicultural NSW where she leads the Settlement Policy team which advises the NSW Coordinator General for Refugee Resettlement, Professor Peter Shergold. Talia holds a Master of Development Studies (Refugees and Displacement) from UNSW, a Master of Social Work, and Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies).

Mitasha Yu completed her Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) and Master of Public Health at UNSW. In her last role, she was Head of International Programs at an international development organisation. She has 12 years’ experience in the public health and global development sector covering program management, operations management, strategic planning, advocacy, research, education and campaigns. She also is highly passionate about climate change and health, and modelling mitigation and adaptation strategies. With a proven track record of program management in complex environments, she has worked on and led teams globally that have implemented 40 programs across 10 countries valued over $11m. She also has experience in teaching and providing clinical care to improve eye health. Mitasha is motivated by collaborating with people to solve problems, learning from the best and inspiring creative solutions through strong leadership.

Chair

Chris Lewis is Head of Partnerships at UNSW Sydney. Chris is a passionate advocate for the role of education in just about any context. As the panel chair, Chris will shape the discussion around 'what makes now the right time to invest in yourself'.
